This after-school program begins October 22, and signing up for it is easy.
Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) kicks off its 23rd Annual “Totally Cool, Totally Art” (TCTA) after-school program benefiting Austin teenagers across town. The highly regarded, award winning program for youth 7th-12th grade begins October 22, 2018 and is expected to bring over 200 youth to various program locations across the city to learn hands-on applications of the visual arts.
TCTA hopes to inspire art skills in teenagers who might not otherwise have such opportunities. The program serves as a creative outlet for self-expression and encourages healthy camaraderie for teens during high-risk hours after school. One of last year’s participants stated, “I enrolled again this year because I found out, when I had TCTA, I was more active, I was getting to meet more people and also getting to know more people as well as learning art from different varieties of artists.”
Totally Cool Totally Art, in partnership and collaboration with PARD's recreation centers, has provided quality hands-on art education to Austin neighborhoods and communities. The recreation centers have also long been known for providing quality recreational programs. Together this partnership utilizes local artists and recreation staff members to give youth an exciting choice of activities during evening hours. This year’s mediums include Urban Art (painting), S.T.E.A.M., Metalsmithing, and Short Film.
The program, which runs through May 2019, includes professional art instruction, mentoring, a snack, and some transportation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs depending on the recreation center. There are two professional gallery exhibitions of the students’ work – MexiCarte and the Dougherty Arts Center. TCTA’s goal is to offer an after-school alternative for teens by creating art opportunities at ten of the city’s recreation centers.
Signing up is easy. Contact your local recreation center to sign up and Parents/Guardians can register students when they attend their first class. Full schedule at www.austintexas.gov/tcta.
